- ➤ A feral cat was rescued after being trapped in a home wall for 11 days when local volunteers carefully cut openings and used food to lure the scared animal out. One helper needed treatment for a bite (she later developed a blood clot) as the cat now enjoys safe outdoor care. WIFR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Winnebago County school districts have registered 3,292 multiracial students for the 2024-25 school year—a 5.4% increase from last year. Rockford School District 205 recorded the highest count with 2,179 students. Rockford Sun
- ➤ RAMP Disability Resources & Services received a $28,750 grant to expand its Project SEARCH program, which helps students with disabilities gain job skills during internships at Mercyhealth and Embassy Suites. Applications for the 2026 to 2027 school year will be accepted at these Rockford locations. Rockford Register Star

- ➤ Rockford social worker Kevin Polky, founder of Four Corners Wellness Center, advises residents to set simple, detailed New Year’s resolutions after a poll showed most focus on health and exercise; local resident Christina Dover plans to continue her active routine at Peak and add travel goals for 2026. - ➤ Olympian Kendrick Farris will visit Rockford from Jan. 8 to Jan. 10 to lead youth wellness and nutrition activations under FEED: Fitness, Education, Equity, Discipline with Rockford Barbell, including a free family night on Jan. 8 from 5 — 7 p.m. and a Weightlifting Meet on Jan. 9 — 10. WIFR
- ➤ At 12:50 a.m. on Jan. 1, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center welcomed its first baby of the new year when Nauticca and Martavian delivered daughter Nai’Aree in Rockford. The newborn weighed 6 lbs. 4.5 oz and measured 19 inches long. WIFR
