- ➤ The Salvation Army is moving its Belvidere thrift store and donation center from 4042 State St. to 413 Southtowne Drive off the 20 Bypass. The new site is set to open March 6 to improve donation logistics and support local rehabilitation efforts. Rock River Current

- ➤ On Jan. 2, new owner Katie Lund took over The Rusty Wheel Tavern in South Beloit. Manager Kristin Karalis & her husband Nate are planning extended hours and special events to create a welcoming, small-town feel. Rock River Current
- ➤ Construction began last May on a nearly 50,000 sqft indoor adventure park at the former Burlington site on East State St.—located behind Old Chicago and Boot Barn. The park, part of a chain with locations in Plano and Pleasantville, does not have a set opening date yet. Rock River Current
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Rockford Public Library and Winnebago County Health Department are offering a free trauma film series that runs from January through June with six films and discussions at the JR Sullivan Theater at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month; the first screening is Jan. 13. - ➤ Rockford has named Adam al-Sirgany as Poet Laureate and Mikiah Gerrity as Youth Poet for 2026+2027; the induction ceremony is scheduled for Jan. 20 at City Hall at 5:30 p.m. Mayor Tom McNamara announced the appointments with local arts groups. Rockford Register Star

- ➤ Jocelyn Solis, a Rockford University senior, earned the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award from Alexi Giannoulias — recognizing her leadership with youth and first-generation students. She led a program assisting over 30 teen leaders and was featured as a speaker at the First Gen Forward Club dinner in Nov. 2025. WIFR
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Christine Gillette, a Rockford dietitian, explained that federal agencies released new dietary guidelines urging more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and varied proteins — resident Tammy Clay said she already follows these basics as the policies aim to address chronic health issues. WIFR
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Emerson Sr and Emerson Jr plan to transform the former watch factory at 325 South Madison into 24 market-rate apartments with an $11.5 million investment. The project awaits final council approval on a $2.7 million forgivable loan and may begin construction this winter. WIFR
