- ➤ More than 100 residents in Ogle County gathered for a candlelight vigil honoring Renee Good—a Minneapolis volunteer fatally shot during a federal operation earlier this month. Organized by Indivisible Ogle County, the event aimed to unite community members in peaceful remembrance. WIFR

- ➤ The Olive Branch food truck temporarily closed after a major mechanical breakdown+owners Bob and Michele Christidis launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $2,600 for repairs so they can resume serving Greek food after eight years. WIFR

- ➤ Nicor Gas filed a $221M rate hike request with the Illinois Commerce Commission on Friday that, if approved, will add less than $6 to monthly bills for customers starting in 2027 (the 11-month review period allows consumer advocates to challenge the rate increase). WIFR
- ➤ Illinois was rated first for workplace development in the Midwest and third nationally by Site Selection Magazine today. State leaders credit strong programs—career training, technical education and employment services—for boosting job support. WIFR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Harlem School District leaders updated staff and families Friday on a plan to consolidate schools after reviewing public feedback. Updated options will be reviewed by the Board of Education at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Harlem High School. WIFR
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Starting Monday, Jan. 12, four panels from the National AIDS Memorial Quilt will be displayed in the City Hall lobby until Jan. 23 during regular hours while special viewings are set for Saturday, Jan. 17 and Monday, Jan. 19 to raise AIDS awareness. WIFR
- ➤ Christy Schroeder, a 52-year-old former nurse diagnosed with terminal cancer on Jan. 5, launched a GoFundMe to raise $3,000 for travel expenses and a gravestone so she can be buried by her dad in Scottsboro, Alabama. Friends are offering donations + prayers in support. WIFR
