COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Severson Dells Nature Center invites the public on Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help plant a new prairie at the former Elliot Golf Course at 888 S. Lyford Road using activities that include launching seed bombs with or without golf clubs + joining hands-on restoration stations.  Rockford Register Star
  • Organizations (including Rock Valley College and Side Street Studio Arts) received a share of $4.3 million in Healing Illinois grants to fund projects on racial healing through dialogue, storytelling, and place. The program also provides technical support with reports and media relations.  Northern Public Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rockford Restaurant Week runs from Jan. 29 to Feb. 8 with a record 80 restaurants serving special prix fixe menus, bundled meal deals, and contests + awards to celebrate local dining. The event boosts community excitement and offers fresh tastes from new and established kitchens.  Go Rockford

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rockford Education Association and district officials met on Thursday night for contract discussions that made little progress on retro pay, wages, working conditions and benefits - another session is set for Feb. 5.  WIFR
  • Rockford Public Schools opened The Quad—a $19 million career education center located at 4151 Samuelson Road near Jefferson High—that offers hands-on training in healthcare, culinary arts and graphic design. 500 sophomores are bused there, and programs in welding, mechanics and engineering will be added next year.  Rockford Register Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Together for Taft is working to revive the NIU outdoor education campus high above the Rock River in Oregon as an environmental education center, & a recent fundraiser held across the river signals progress for the site that began as an artist colony in 1898.  Northern Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews began emergency water main repairs on the 300 block of Spring Creek Rd — from the Route 251 off ramp to Starkweather Drive — on Jan.29, and the work is expected to last two to four business days, so drivers should choose alternative routes.  WIFR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rockford musician Aidan McLane, known for fueling the local punk scene, died from hypothermia at Aldeen Park on Jan. 19 after struggling with mental health and access to care. A memorial show with local band Chai Teeth is scheduled for Feb. 15 at the Norwegian Lofts to support his family.  WIFR

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The historic LaFayette Hotel at 411 Mulberry Street is being transformed into affordable housing with 54 apartments for at-risk adults + live-to-work artist spaces, funded partly by tax credits. Leases begin in February with move-ins starting in March.  WIFR
