COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After council approved $300K for a senior center two days ago, the nonprofit leader said his agency will not pursue a former church due to higher costs and will consider a bank building on E. State Street. The board will decide by the end of February.  WIFR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Raven will open Tuesday evening at 6876 Spring Creek Road during Rockford Restaurant Week; co-owner Chef Scott Carlson said the menu will feature Scandinavian-inspired dishes, pizzas and more (operating 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday).  WIFR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The US Department of Education will bring its History Rocks Trail to Independence tour to Genoa-Kingston High School today at 2:30 p.m. to celebrate America 250, though union officials have raised concerns about safety and transparency, including sign-up and scheduling issues.  Northern Public Radio
  • Teachers at West Middle School face a severe shortage with 469 students lacking a certified math teacher and classes exceeding special education limits. The district offers a bonus ($6000) for hard-to-fill roles and plans to develop local talent.  Northern Public Radio
  • The annual CEANCI Future Top Chef Culinary Skills Competition took place Tuesday at Forest Hills Country Club, where 16 teams of high school chefs competed in a pasta-making challenge judged on taste and presentation. Culinary students from eight schools gained real-world experience in the competitive contest.  WIFR

  • OSF Healthcare radiation oncologist Dr. Iftekhar Ahmad discussed the impact of cancer on Feb. 4 during World Cancer Day — he emphasized the role of awareness and prevention as millions face the disease each year.  WIFR

  • Illinois natives Tessa Janecke, Kendall Coyne Schofield and Abby Murphy will play with Team USA Women's Hockey at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. They face Czechia today and will meet Finland on Saturday in the preliminary round while Coyne also serves as a coach with the Rockford Ice Hogs.  Northern Public Radio
