COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ron Clewer is the new executive director of PlatFORM Group — he also leads its nonprofit partners, ZION Development Corporation and Northwest Neighbors in boosting affordable housing in Midtown and Northwest Rockford. His appointment comes as the city faces a growing housing shortage.  Rockford Register Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Rockford Historical Society is hosting History Trivia Night on March 21 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hall, 211 N. Main St. Tickets are $20 for individuals or $60 per team - prizes will be awarded to the winners.  Rockford Register Star
  • Despite Sunday’s storms, members of Saint Anthony of Padua Church in Rockford celebrated an annual tradition by decorating an altar with breads, pastries, flowers, and symbolic foods in honor of St. Joseph. The practice traces back to an ancient Sicilian drought-famine tradition.  WIFR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wild Ones of Rock River Valley and Severson Dells Nature Center hosted a native garden workshop Sunday, March 15 at 8786 Montague Rd, teaching residents how to create yards that support local wildlife and offering sample plans for starting their own gardens.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews are repairing a water main at S. Central Avenue and Preston Street, causing a partial closure with limited access. Repairs began on March 15 + are expected to last three to five business days.  WIFR

SPORTS NEWS

  • On March 15, Rock Valley College men's bowling team clinched a national championship in Lansing, finishing 350 pins ahead of Iowa Western + marking its ninth national title overall.  Rockford Register Star
