Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 23rd of March.
Good morning, Rockford.
Nearly 300 Rockford families received free smoke alarms on March 22 during the Red Cross Sound the Alarm event to boost fire safety.
The campaign comes after a series of multi-family house fires — officials noted that working alarms can lower fire death risk by 50% and urged residents to check their systems if installation was delayed.
Rockford officials are opening online pre-applications for the next round of the Expanded Rehab Assistance Program, which offers up to $60,000 in forgivable loans to fix home repairs for safety, code, or accessibility issues.
The pre-application is open until 5 p.m. March 28 for eligible single family homes, and a lottery will be held on March 31 with notifications by April 4 (in-person help can be scheduled for March 27 at City Hall, 425 E. State Street).
