COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rockford’s seasonal yard waste pickup resumed March 23; residents must follow guidelines from Rock River Disposal and use two-ply compostable paper bags or 32-gallon cans (bundling larger branches) to dispose of lawn debris. Yard waste burning is also prohibited.  Rockford Register Star
  • Woodward Charitable Trust awarded $9,000 to Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois to support Project Opportunity today. The grant will help local youth access leadership training, STEM activities and outdoor experiences.  WIFR
  • Bruce, a friendly 1-year-old Labrador mix, is available for adoption at Winnebago County Animal Services (4517 N. Main St., Rockford) and could become a loving new companion.  WIFR
  • DISH customers have missed local news and March Madness since nearly two weeks ago when WIFR was removed for an unresolved contract deal - the station urges customers to call 833-853-3787 to help restore its lineup.  WIFR

  • Platt Hill Nursery moves into the former Village Green Home and Garden at 6101 East Riverside Blvd and will hold a grand opening celebration from April 3-5. The business honors the site's legacy under new management while expanding its regional presence.  WIFR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two Rockford artists are working to clear clutter from their mobile home park—leftover items from a previous tenant hamper their creativity as they manage tight finances and health issues. They plan to use some tax refund funds to start cleanup and regain their creative space.  Northern Public Radio
  • Voltavelle — a local poet and filmmaker — is featured in this week’s Poetically Yours edition as she presents her new poem 'The Bones' that draws on her Rockford roots. Readers are invited to explore her work and celebrate our local literary talent.  Northern Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • IDOT announced work on the Baxter Road bridge over I-39 in Winnebago County will begin March 23. The $1 million project will repair the deck, replace expansion joints, and install a deck overlay, with one lane open and completion expected by July 24 — drivers should use caution.  WIFR
