- ➤ A new Hampton Inn is planned for 4170 Bell School Road in Loves Park north of Home2Suites — the 94-room, four-story hotel will start construction this summer and is expected to take about two years to complete. Rock River Current
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Rockford police and Winnebago County State's Attorney’s Office held a news conference yesterday at 9 a.m. to detail charges in an ongoing criminal investigation. WIFR
- ➤ Two men—Marquzise Alexander, 22, and Angelo Woods, 21—pleaded guilty to first degree murder in a 2022 shooting that killed Davonte Simmons and were sentenced to 24 years and 6 months in prison with 3 years of mandatory supervised release. WIFR
- ➤ David Marshall, 47, pleaded guilty to aggravated arson after setting fires at Wired Cafe and Park Terrace Apartments and was sentenced to 30 years in prison — he will also serve six years of mandatory supervised release. WIFR

- ➤ Rockford residents will vote on April 1 for the 8th Ward city council seat between incumbent Karen Hoffman and independent Jason Leviskas. Hoffman says she will work to boost high-end and veteran housing while Leviskas plans to cut property taxes and improve public safety—city officials urge early voting to ease lines. WIFR
- ➤ Illinois has seen a surge in government jobs since 2023, and state officials say an increase of roughly 44,600 positions—costing taxpayers over $4 billion—raises concerns about resource allocation and long-term sustainability. - ➤ Getty Garden, an affordable housing project for seniors and disabled residents in Rockton, received a $1M grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority to convert the vacant Goldie Floberg Center into 21 permanent units, and the Winnebago County Housing Authority donated nearby land for a community park+ the grant builds on a previous $12M award and is part of the IDHA’s Permanent Supporting Housing Development Program across 14 projects statewide. Teacher Appreciation Night
The Rockford IceHogs and the Golden Apple Foundation are partnering for Teacher Appreciation Night at the IceHogs game on Friday, March 28, for the IceHogs 7 p.m. game against the Manitoba Moose! At the game on March 28, there will be additional ways you can support Golden Apple.
