COMMUNITY NEWS

  • One year after the March 27 attacks, Keith Fahrney and his wife Rebecca in southwest Rockford say they are healing after Keith intervened during the incident that left him and neighbor Lindsey Craig injured when 22-year-old Christian Soto attacked, and he was stabbed; they now look forward to returning to normal life with more time for family sports and community activities. This reflection comes as they work to overcome both physical injuries and lasting emotional scars.  WIFR
  • Rock River Valley YMCA will host the Emerging Leaders Challenge this summer to give young men of color in grades 9-12 hands-on experience by shadowing the executive leadership team. The program runs June 16 to August 1, pays $15 per hour for 12 hours a week, and ends with a final presentation at NIU Rockford (applications are due by April 18).  WIFR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A two-vehicle crash just after 10 a.m. on March 27 in the 200 block of S. Main Street damaged the BMO Bank branch in the William Brown building—officials said injuries are unknown and the investigation remains ongoing.  WIFR

CRIME NEWS

  • One year after Christian Soto allegedly stabbed members of her family in an attack on March 27th, 2024 that left four dead and seven injured, Cathy Gilfillan and her family are living away from their former home and coping with survivor’s guilt plus painful memories as they rely on therapy and a devoted family dog to help heal.  WIFR
  • A 15-year-old suspect smashed the door of Variety Discount at 3848 Broadway in Rockford around 3:40 a.m. on March 27—officers say he was caught inside while his accomplice fled in a stolen car—he was charged with burglary and criminal damage to property and released to his parent.  WTVO
  • Four teenagers were arrested on Wednesday for shooting two homes in a Rockford neighborhood+ police said the youths fled in a vehicle+ a rifle was recovered at the scene.  WIFR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new survey by the Greater Rockford Chamber of Commerce shows that local businesses feel optimistic about the region’s economic future—nearly 90% plan to maintain or increase investments and 45% expect to add staff. The chamber will release its next quarterly survey on June 2 to track trends and guide economic actions.  WIFR

  • Illinois congressmen Eric Sorensen and Darin LaHood reintroduced a bipartisan bill to rename the Rockford Post Office in honor of slain USPS mail carrier Jay Larson, a 25-year veteran fatally attacked last year.  WTVO

    The Rockford IceHogs and the Golden Apple Foundation are partnering for Teacher Appreciation Night at the IceHogs game on Friday, March 28, for the IceHogs 7 p.m. game against the Manitoba Moose! At the game on March 28, there will be additional ways you can support Golden Apple. All proceeds that night from the IceHogs 50/50 raffle and Spin-to-Win game will be donated to Golden Apple to aid in its mission to celebrate and support educational excellence in our community. March 28 is also a $2 beer and soft drink night at the IceHogs!
