COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rockford Area Pizza Madness is underway on Facebook with over 2,500 community votes and 32 local restaurants in a bracket-style contest. Today, the final match features The Parks against Nunzio's (The Parks bested Napoli's and Nunzio's defeated Capri) with voting open for 24 hours from 7 a.m.  WIFR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Internationally acclaimed folk singer Mark Dvorak, known as Chicago's Troubadour, will perform at today's No Kings rally at the Rockford City Market Pavillion on Water and State streets from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will conclude with a one-mile march downtown.  Rockford Register Star

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA reported Rockford’s gas price stood at $4.13 on Friday as Illinois’ average reached $4.23 amid a month-long spike + Cook County saw the highest rate at $4.50 while Brown County had the lowest at $3.80.  Rockford Register Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rockford piano teacher Merle Langs, who has spent nearly 80 years teaching, prepares to celebrate her 90th birthday on Apr. 9. She teaches students in person & online across the country and will spend the weekend with family and friends who traveled to see her.  WIFR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new unbanded peregrine falcon joined Brian on the eight-floor ledge of the former news tower after beloved Louise disappeared last fall — the pair are now incubating four eggs as a sign of recovery for the falcon population.  WIFR
  • The Natural Land Institute purchased 149 acres surrounding a 4-acre nature preserve in Davis Junction to protect rare prairie habitats and support conservation efforts. An open house is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sep. 9.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Loves Park Police Department has joined the nationwide Blue Envelope program to help drivers with autism and other communication needs during traffic stops. The program offers pick-up materials at local sites and requires no registration (inquiries can be directed to the department).  WIFR
  • Loves Park Police Department has joined the Blue Envelope Program to help officers interact with neurodivergent drivers — the envelopes guide drivers on managing anxiety during stops. Residents can pick up envelopes at four sites including 540 Loves Park Drive and North Suburban Library.  Rock River Current

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local entrepreneurs are transforming the former Village Green on North Main into North & Main Market, a dining hall with nine vendor spaces, a greenhouse with aeroponic towers, and a hot dog stand named Pop’s (honoring founder’s grandfather).
