COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Homefront 815 Veterans Center closed operations Monday, March 30 due to limited funding and health issues affecting its president, Ted Cristo — who stepped down on March 22. The center had served veterans at the Ross-Pearson VFW Post since October 2025.  WIFR
  • Casanova (a two-year-old male cat) has been adopted, marking a happy ending for this Adopt 815 feature at Winnebago County Animal Services. The shelter at 4517 N. Main St. continues to welcome more pets for adoption.  WIFR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Fielmann Vision Care opened its new vision center in Rockford on March 30 at (7474 E. State St., Suite 118) to serve patients with full weekday hours and limited Saturday service. The company now has three local practices after recent openings in Machesney Park and Belvidere.  WIFR
  • Rockford-area owners of two Scooter’s Coffee locations won the Franchisee Rookie of the Year award at the 2026 conference in Omaha last week. They opened their first drive-thru in Rockford in May 2025 and later set up a nontraditional site in Machesney Park.  Rockford Register Star
  • Fresco at the Gardens opened its season yesterday at 8 a.m. at 318 Spring Creek Rd. and now serves breakfast and lunch with scenic views of Anderson Japanese Gardens + which will welcome visitors on Friday, Apr. 17.  WIFR
  • UAW Local 1268 updated members on Monday, March 30 that Stellantis is working with VP Rich Boyer to secure a reopening timeline for the Belvidere plant, with $10 million set aside for equipment assessments & substation replacements. Previous warnings of a seven-month retooling delay did not appear in the latest update.  WIFR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Nearly 4,000 Illinois workers face layoffs from multiple businesses following February announcements, as TreeHouse Foods in South Beloit will cut 168 jobs starting April 17 plus Walgreens and other companies report major changes. The layoffs are part of ongoing industry reorganizations.  Rockford Register Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Natural Land Institute closed on 149 acres south of Rockford to protect the rare Beach Cemetery Prairie and its historic settler cemetery near Davis Junction. An open house is set for Sept. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m., and restoration work will start using a farm lease until 2027.  Rockford Register Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Allergies are worse in Rockford this year because climate change has led to warmer weather and more pollen, lengthening the season. OSF HealthCare nurse practitioner Mary O’Meara recommends over the counter remedies — use store-bought saline for nasal rinses — and calling a doctor if symptoms persist.  WIFR

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local broker Bobby Walsh’s Essex Main Holdings bought the former Essex Wire factory at 2816 N. Main St to redevelop up to 200 townhouses and business spaces—including a section for residents 55 and older. The city will help with cleanup next month, aiming to break ground in 2028.  Rock River Current
