CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two Rockford men, Lamarcus Smith and Kalen Watkins, were arrested on March 30 on charges that include possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest, and firearm violations after police spotted the car at a Mobil Gas Station on Halsted and N. Main and recovered a loaded handgun when they caught Smith on Church Street — Watkins was later apprehended near Pierce Avenue and both were booked into Winnebago County Jail. WTVO
- ➤ Rockford police arrested two teens on Saturday for a stolen car and car burglaries at the 4100 block of Laramie Drive (a 17-year-old was released to his parents after being charged with burglary to a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen vehicle, while a 16-year-old was taken to juvenile detention for possession of a stolen vehicle). ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Illinois RiverWatch will hold water quality monitoring workshops this spring to teach participants of all ages how to gather and analyze data from local rivers. Volunteers will learn field methods to calculate a macroinvertebrate biotic index that indicates potential pollution throughout April and May. Northern Public Radio
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rockford will soon see major street improvements funded by the Fiscal Year 2025-2029 Capital Improvement Program that invests 343 million dollars in infrastructure. Work already under way on Whitman Street and plans to reconstruct Madison Street, begin repairs on 11th Street on April 7th, and resurface other roads through Fall will update the city’s road network. - ➤ A dilapidated building at 227 N. Wyman St.—once home to Blue Cross Blue Shield and located next to the new public library—was demolished on Monday after plans for a luxury apartment complex fell through; Rockford agreed to share up to $375,000 in demolition costs using American Rescue Plan Act funding. - ➤ Rockford's Discovery Center Museum will offer $5.29 admissions on Saturday, April 5th from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. in a teamup with the Illinois State Treasurer’s office, where the first 400 children can decorate a piggy bank at the Little Savers Crafting Workshop — representatives from Bright Start 529 will answer questions about saving for college.
