  • Rockford's Canine Crunchery (at 1888 Daimler Road) announced Wednesday that after 14 years it will close from today until April 9 to prepare for a final closing sale starting April 11 and ending April 26, with plans to retire on April 30.  WTVO
  • Fifty-one Rockford restaurants shared $189,871 in COVID-19 relief grants on April 2—each received an amount based on high unemployment tax bills as part of a third round that has provided local businesses $855,158 overall.  WTVO

CRIME NEWS

  • Rockford police charged Nelson Brown with aggravated fleeing to elude, possession with intent to deliver cannabis and having a revoked driver’s license after he repeatedly ran from officers just after 10 p.m. April 1 — using a StarChase GPS device and a K-9 unit to locate his unoccupied vehicle along Kinsey Street and detain him on Hanson Street where investigators recovered over 345 grams of cannabis.  WIFR

  • Rockford Symphony Orchestra teams with The Blueshift Big Band for a unique concert exploring video game music at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 5 at the Coronado Performing Arts Center. Before the show, Rockford University Regents Esports hosts a live Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament and an after-party at Prairie Street Brewing Company will feature games, a meet-and-greet with the musicians, and themed drinks.  WIFR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new study found that between 2021 and 2024 typical Illinois homeowners saw home insurance costs jump 50% from $1,968 to $2,942 for $350,000 coverage + rates in Chicago rose 46% from $1,964 to $2,876. Lawmakers and consumer groups are urging tighter state oversight and added support for climate resiliency as higher premiums burden many homeowners.  Northern Public Radio

  • Today, Rockford Public Library celebrated its annual day of giving and asked for donations to support its summer reading program Level Up, which helps children keep their reading skills sharp during the break. The program begins on May 31 with a kick-off party + ends on August 16 with a final celebration featuring a magician + and prizes including a Nintendo Switch and Kindle Fire.  WIFR
