COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents and business owners in Rockford are invited by the Better Business Bureau to Free Community Shred Day on April 12 at MembersAlliance Credit Union at 2550 S. Alpine Road to safely shred personal documents and protect their identities. Participants can shred up to 2 boxes per car (a limit set to manage the flow).  WIFR

CRIME NEWS

  • Rockford police arrested a 15-year-old suspect as the fourth charged person in the deadly 2024 shooting that took place after 11 p.m. on Aug. 24 in a parking lot on E. State Street where Chase Higgins was shot—he faces charges of first degree murder and aggravated battery while three other suspects have varied custody statuses.  WIFR
  • Rockford police arrested a 15-year-old suspect in connection with the murder on the 6600 block of E. State Street on April 9th — records show that two of the three charged men were released pretrial while one remains in custody.  WTVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw, a four-time Super Bowl Champion, will perform on June 29 at Hard Rock Casino Rockford. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. April 11 and doors open at 7 p.m. with entry limited to those 21 and older.  WIFR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Illinois Department of Natural Resources advised Rockford residents to be careful when encountering young wildlife today as many animals such as fawns, fledgling birds, and rabbits are cared for by their parents and do not need human help — the advice recommends watching from a distance and keeping pets away to prevent harm.  Rockford Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Rockford poet laureate Jenna Goldsmith announced her run for Rock Valley College’s Board of Trustees during an April 3 interview and will be appointed on April 22—she will serve a six-year term and aims to bring her background in education and community involvement to the job. Her candidacy comes as she supports projects such as the downtown west campus to benefit local higher education.  Northern Public Radio
  • The Illinois House passed a bill on Tuesday, April 9th that bans move-in fees for new tenants and stops landlords from charging any fee to process or review rental applications—this law also prevents landlords from renaming fees to bypass the rule and restricts credit checks. The law left security deposits unchanged.  WTVO
  • Illinois lawmakers are considering the Digital Age Assurance Act, which would require cell phone and electronic device manufacturers to collect users' birthdates—this measure is designed to block minors from accessing adult content. If passed, the law will take effect on January 1st, 2026 and restrict local governments from setting different standards.  WTVO
