  • Northern Illinois Food Bank launched its 13th annual Fight Hunger. Spark Change fundraiser yesterday at Walmart on Northridge Drive saw donations in 13 counties, via round-ups or specially marked products until May 3, convert each dollar into eight dollars of groceries & help local food pantries serve families.  Rock River Current

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local florists and enthusiasts are installing a grand flower display today at 10 a.m. in front of the GoRockford building on Main and State Street to promote the Rockford Art Museum fundraiser, where community members may take blooms home and enjoy special $10 off Fashion in Bloom tickets.  WIFR
  • Jenny Scara visits WNIJ Studio A to perform songs from her new record I’ve Got a Story to Tell; her hour-long session features live band music + an engaging conversation about her background. The session is streaming on WNIJ and available on all major platforms.  Northern Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • District 205 hosted its inaugural career fair on The Quad, where over 2500 juniors and seniors met nearly 40 local employers to explore entry level jobs without a college requirement. The event provided insights & work options in trades, healthcare, culinary, hospitality, and public safety.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Retired Air Force Major General John Borling, one of Rockford’s most decorated veterans, shared his perspective on the Iran war during an exclusive interview with WIFR on Tuesday — he detailed his past service and noted the serious challenges ahead.  WIFR
  • On April 7, the Roscoe village board voted 5-1 to cancel its mosquito control program for the 2026 season because the $25K cost was seen as outweighing its benefits. Residents may see more summer mosquitoes and should take steps like eliminating standing water and using EPA-approved repellents.  WIFR
  • Rockford officials and the landlord of Versailles Place Apartments reached a settlement during a court hearing Thursday that requires repairs by October + tenants had long complained about issues including a nonworking elevator and faulty fire alarms.  WIFR

  • More than 250 top table-tennis athletes will compete for national titles at the UW Health Sports Factory — 305 South Madison St. — from today to Sunday, with single-day tickets at $10 and a three-day pass at $20.  WIFR
