ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Crews at Byron Nuclear Plant finished installing a new low-pressure turbine during its spring outage, part of an $800M upgrade to boost efficiency, production capacity, and job support by powering 100,000 homes & local businesses. The project plans more turbine upgrades in fall 2027 and 2028. WIFR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Illinois State Board of Education data shows that in the 2024-25 school year white students made up the largest share: 40.9% of 43,613 students enrolled in Winnebago County school districts—Hispanic students accounted for 26.6% while Harlem Unit and Rockford districts reported the most diverse enrollments. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Illinois House passed House Bill 2564 on April 8 to exempt teachers taking extra classes from a pension penalty that cost local districts money. Rep. Dave Vella (68th District) expects the Senate to pass it and the Governor to sign it by June, ensuring more teachers remain in classrooms. WIFR
- ➤ The city approved a demolition permit for UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital to tear down the 163-year-old Briggs Mansion at 1244 E. State St despite a landmark application, and demolition is set to begin in May after many key architectural features were removed by Renaissance Roofing. Rock River Current
- ➤ A Pecatonica resident noted that tornado sirens were not audible during heavy rain and flash flooding. Winnebago County officials said 14 sirens remain in disrepair (down from 19 previously) and urged residents to use wireless alerts as more severe weather is expected today. WIFR
- ➤ Following recent severe storms and heavy rainfall, officials say the Rock River in Winnebago County is under a no wake order to protect boaters from high water levels and debris. The sheriff’s office + ComEd have opened all dam gates to manage the flow. WIFR
- ➤ Mayor Tom McNamara proposed a program to help local entrepreneurs fill vacant storefronts by linking them with business incubators — offering startup capital and first-month rent assistance.
