- ➤ After last week’s EF-1 tornado, Roscoe residents received help with repairs and cleanup at a resource center held Friday at Life Church; nearly 20 agencies offered tree removal, insurance guidance and other support. A similar center is tentatively scheduled for Lena on Monday, Apr. 27. WIFR

- ➤ Poetically Yours features northern Illinois poet Ty Yeager, who presents his poem 'Tangled Sparks' today (he is known for roles in local commercials, indie films, and video game voice work). Northern Public Radio
- ➤ Rockford native and Emmy-winning pianist Emily Bear will perform at Hard Rock Live for the Rosecrance Foundation's annual benefit on May 12. The event will mark her return home as she shares her celebrated talent with the community. WIFR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Local educators were recognized at the Golden Apple Foundation’s Excellence in Education Banquet on Apr. 24 at Tebala Event Center—honoring the 2026 Golden Apple Teacher Award winners, including teachers and principals from local schools. Around 380 attendees celebrated excellence in teaching. Rockford Register Star
- ➤ The third annual Northern Illinois Small District Conference brought together 750 K-12 educators from local districts (including Rockton, Winnebago, and surrounding areas) to learn new strategies in student behavior, artificial intelligence in classrooms, and reading instruction. - ➤ A Lee County deputy was honored on April 23 for his life-saving response during a February truck crash near the Green River, where he applied tourniquets to curb severe blood loss (officials said) until EMS arrived. WIFR
- ➤ Neighbors near Friday Road (southeast Rockford) are urging more transparency from Monarch Energy regarding a potential data center discussed since January 2025. City officials say no proposal has been presented yet and public hearings will occur if a deal advances. WIFR

- ➤ Medicaid dental service payments in Rockford reached $1.3 million in 2024, up 51.7% from 2023 — most claims came from ZIP codes 61102 and 61104, reflecting a significant rise in local billing. Rockford Sun
