  • Hard Rock Casino Rockford donated $2,500 on Friday+more than double last year's amount to the Marine Toys for Tots foundation to fund its Christmas toy drive.   • RAMP Disability Resources and Services hosted its annual ‘Sip and Sample’ event at Nicholas Conservatory and Gardens last night—offering food, drinks, a silent auction, a butterfly exhibit and live music—to raise funds for disability support services.  WTVO

  • QuikTrip opened a new station on Rockford’s south side at the corner of Sandy Hollow Road and 11th Street, offering gasoline at $3.05 and drawing long lines from drivers—this move renews the push for lower pump prices.   • A 29-year-old man died in a single-vehicle crash on North 2nd Street and Whitman in Rockford on Friday—emergency crews arrived at 1 p.m. and his death was confirmed around 3 p.m.  WTVO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifty-one students graduated yesterday from the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford at the Coronado Performing Arts Center — the ceremony highlighted their commitment to medicine as several begin residencies amid ongoing healthcare challenges.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • First responders and regional police, firefighters, hospital staff, and ARFF crews took part in a full-scale disaster response exercise last Friday at Chicago-Rockford International Airport from 9 a.m. until noon to simulate a passenger aircraft crash, and the Federal Aviation Administration required the triennial drill—designed to test coordination and guide improvements—while commercial flights ran normally.  WIFR
  • Mayor Tom McNamara chose Sarah Leys to lead Community and Economic Development, Angela Hammer to head Law, and Scott Sanders to run Public Works + their picks are subject to City Council confirmation on May 5.
