CRIME NEWS

  • A federal court in Rockford sentenced Ronald Coleman, a 45-year-old truck driver from Barstow, to 11 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to trafficking $2.5 million worth of cocaine—he drove a semi-truck on I-88 in Whiteside County with the intent to deliver 200 pounds to a Chicago warehouse—his plea came after admitting his actions in 2023.  WIFR
  • Rockford police arrested 20-year-old Craig Marks at 5:25 p.m. on Friday, April 25 in the 800 block of Soper Avenue after a traffic stop led to the discovery of a loaded handgun and cannabis—he now faces charges for aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and cannabis possession and has been booked into Winnebago County Jail.  WTVO
  • On April 26th, Rockford police stopped a vehicle near Ridge and Bell avenues and found drug paraphernalia, more than five grams of MDMA, over 100 grams of cannabis and cash, leading to the arrests of Michael Gregory, 22—who appeared in court Monday on drug charges—and Quintavius Simpson, 37—whose next court date is set for June 5th.  WIFR

  • Blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa will perform live at the Coronado Performing Arts Center on November 10th at 8 p.m.—tickets will go on sale Friday, May 2nd at 10 a.m. at Ticketmaster or the Coronado box office.  WTVO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A U.S. Army Reserve First Sergeant, Vincent Lara, settled his lawsuit with Rock Valley College after he said the school’s police department retaliated against him for his military service. The college did not admit any fault— the case is now closed.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state of Illinois granted $400,000 to the International Women’s Baseball Center to improve Beyer Peaches Stadium so it can host professional league games. Sen. Steve Stadelman and Mayor Tom McNamara announced the funds at the stadium as part of a $5 million Phase One plan to renovate the venue+ create a women’s baseball museum.  WTVO
  • Union members and advocates gathered in Rockford on April 28th to honor workers who died on the job last year and express concerns about potential safety protocol cuts. Mayor Tom McNamara, Rep. Maurice West, and Sen. Steve Stadelman spoke at the event—while labor advocates urged stronger training and worker protections.  WTVO
