- ➤ 5 Alarm Coin Laundry — owned by retired firefighters — launched Fresh for Seniors today at its Mulford Road location to offer free laundry to seniors ages 60 and older and expanded its Fresh for Learning service for Rockford Public Schools students at three locations. The programs are supported by a $50,000 grant from Molina Healthcare of Illinois and an idea from police officer Patrice Turner. Rock River Current

- ➤ Stellantis said it will reopen the Belvidere Assembly Plant in 2027 despite changes to auto tariff policy from the White House—sticking to its 2023 Collective Bargaining Agreement. The reopening is expected to bring back 1,500 union members to build a new midsize truck. WTVO
- ➤ Chicago Rockford International Airport announced new flights and recorded record passenger numbers in March. Starting May 22, direct flights to Nashville will run every Thursday and Sunday while international flights to Huatulco, Cancun, and Punta Cana become available with tickets booking beginning May 3 — the airport saw growth of 15% in January, 27% in February, and 34% in March compared to last year. - ➤ After a year of treatment at Elgin Mental Health Center, David Baldwin, a 58-year-old man charged with two counts of first degree murder for the stabbing death of Scott Rocen in Pecatonica, was found unfit to stand trial and will return to treatment for up to five years—he will face trial if his mental health improves. - ➤ Madison Dorsey, 20, was arrested on Monday and charged with aggravated arson, residential arson, and arson causing property damage after she allegedly set a fire in the kitchen at Stepping Stones Care Facility during an argument when three people were present — officers said the fire began when she used an oven to light paper on fire. - ➤ Rockford's biannual ArtScene gallery walk took place last Friday and Saturday at 40 venues including Inferno Clay Studio and RealBeautifulYou LLC, where local artists presented their work. The event, a favorite since 1987—featuring both new venues and seasoned participants, drew community members to experience the city's creative spirit. Northern Public Radio

- ➤ During the 2023-24 school year, 28.8% of the 542 students in Winnebago Community Unit School District 323 passed the math test per the Illinois State Board of Education — showing a 1% drop from the previous year. The results highlight ongoing challenges in student math performance. Rockford Sun

- ➤ Renovations have begun on the Family Court Center to improve navigation and court services for Rockford residents. The main courthouse entrance will temporarily move to 403 Elm Street beginning May 5 until modernized spaces make the facility fully operational by summer 2026—a project funded by the American Recovery Plan Act and the Winnebago County Board.
