  • Beef-a-Roo has launched its Beef-a-Roo Loves Rockford (campaign) to donate $1,000 each to Rockford Public Schools and the Harlem School District, with special promotions planned as the company expands with 10 new locations by yearend.  WIFR
  • Rockford planners unveiled a final plan to turn the former John Nelson School in Keith Creek into a flood-resilient greenspace to manage stormwater + add community amenities like a pavilion and walking paths; construction may begin this summer pending final permits.  WIFR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bucciferro Family McDonald’s will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, May 4 at 3844 W. Riverside Boulevard near Walmart (across from Aldi) in Rockford, adding a new restaurant to its local lineup.  WIFR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Coronado Theatre launches its free summer cinema series with Wicked: For Good on Saturday, June 13 at 3 p.m. and Zootopia 2 on Saturday, July 11; the community can enjoy free admission with required tickets while food and activities will be available for purchase.  Rockford Register Star
  • Jim Winter, known as the Driftless Digger, led the Under Rocks podcast team on a treasure hunt at an old farmhouse in Ogle County on April 30. He used his metal detector to find hidden items — a real-life adventure that brings local history to life.  Northern Public Radio
  • The African American Gallery unveils a new exhibit honoring Black veterans from Jefferson-Horton American Legion Post 340, featuring photographs, artifacts, and personal stories. The display runs Sunday, May 3 through Sunday, Aug. 30 at the Ethnic Heritage Museum with a presentation at 2:30 p.m.  Rockford Register Star
  • Pyzow! will perform live at Studio A this week, presenting new songs from their upcoming second album and hosting a band talk. Fans can catch the unique sound of the group during the session.  Northern Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rockford Promise introduced an internship program on Thursday, Apr. 30 that connects scholars with local employers in partnership with The Workforce Connection & the Greater Rockford Chamber. The effort is part of broader initiatives to boost talent through a regional job board and leadership training at Rockford University.  Rock River Current
  • NIU will launch a Master of Science in physics focused on quantum science this fall in partnership with Fermilab. Students will start classes in Fall 2026 and have summer research opportunities to gain hands-on experience.  WIFR
  • Biology instructors Juliet Moderow and Karla Giuffre at Highland Community College founded the Women+ in Science Club, uniting science students with mentorship and guest speakers who highlight both historical and modern achievements in the field today.  Northern Public Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An unnamed peregrine falcon in downtown Rockford laid four eggs over a month ago and the first egg hatched on Thursday morning (5:45 a.m.) as shown on the Sinnissippi Audubon Society’s Nest Cam; one egg broke and was eaten by the adult while two remain to hatch.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Road work begins today in Winnebago and Ogle counties with lane closures on major routes in Rockford (IDOT crews will seal joint cracks and re-stripe roads) until work finishes by July 20. Drivers should obey flaggers and posted signs throughout the construction.  Rockford Register Star
