COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local VFW in Roscoe presented a $2,000 check to Vets Roll from meat raffles held mostly at Benny’s from January to March. The proceeds from April + May raffles will go to Veterans Stand Down to supply veterans with needed clothing.  WIFR
  • Alice Alfredson, a Peterson Meadows resident who has lived in Rockford most of her life, celebrated her 102nd birthday May 3 with a dinner party that brought together staff, residents — and loved ones. She stays active by joining facility-organized activities and enjoys live music at events.  WIFR
  • On Saturday, Rockford-area veterans shared their Vietnam War experiences at a community event where students from Harlem High School interviewed them in a documentary project—designed to capture the lasting impact of the war and honor their service. The project helped bring these personal stories to light and strengthen community ties.  WIFR
  • Lockwood Park opened on May 3 with free activities like a petting zoo and meeting farm animals at 5201 Safford Drive, and families enjoyed discounted wagon rides and pony experiences. The park will continue hosting Saturdays in the Park every week through September (including scheduled horseback trail rides and riderless pony races).  WIFR

CRIME NEWS

  • Rockford Police arrested Ayanna Benson for allegedly attacking a woman at a Dollar Tree on May 1 around 10 a.m.—she admitted to recording the attack and fleeing in a white GMC with a friend and now faces charges for aggravated battery and criminal property damage.  WTVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Peter Mera, a well-known local artist, opened House on Main at 3128 N. Main St. as a new art gallery and event space — the venue will host art shows, music events, yoga sessions and private dinners.  WIFR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • During the 2023-24 school year, 79.7% of students in Harlem Unit School District 122 did not meet math standards on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness test — a 1.5% drop from last year. The district serves schools in Winnebago County with its main office in Machesney Park.  Rockford Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rockford’s new 13th Ward Office opened May 3 at the Boys and Girls Club on Kilburn Avenue to give residents a space to access city services and share ideas. Alderman Tamir Bell cut the ribbon and said the hub promotes accessibility and transparency in government — a key step to serving local needs.  WIFR
