- ➤ Ted O’Donnell and Tom Luepkes, co-chairmen of the Rockford 4th of July Civic Committee, said this year Rockford’s fireworks will launch from the Jefferson Street bridge—a location not used in 25 years—and festivities will move to Water Street, inside Joe Marino Park and under the Rockford City Market pavilion. The fireworks are funded by donations with no city tax dollars used. Rock River Current

- ➤ A 71-year-old man from Cottage Grove, Wis. died Friday when his Kia Sorento was hit by a semi-truck on Interstate 39 near Baxter Road, which caused the car to flip and blocked traffic for hours—responders found him deceased and took the Kia driver to a local hospital. WIFR
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Historians, veterans, and Rockford residents gathered at Veterans Memorial Hall on May 5th to examine the struggles of local abolitionists as part of a Civil War roundtable discussion—hosted by Vietnam veteran Stanley Campbell who used 1830s newspapers to show how critics of slavery were treated harshly in both the North and South. The event is held weekly and is open to the public. WTVO
- ➤ Actor Billy Bob Thornton and his band The Boxmasters will perform at Hard Rock Live in Rockford on Sept. 19 as part of a tour for their new album Pepper Tree Hill; doors open at 7 p.m. and all attendees must be 21 or older. Tickets go on sale May 9 with presales starting today— the album is set for release on July 11. WIFR
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A new PCI Pharma Services facility will be built at the corner of Linden Road and Alpine Road, adding about 300,000 square feet and boosting local jobs, city officials said. Construction is expected to begin this summer after the facility moves from the 14th Ward to the 6th Ward on May 5th — a major step for Rockford’s economic growth. WTVO

- ➤ Jaime Salgado resigned from the Winnebago County Board on May 2 and was sworn in as Rockford City Council member for Ward 11 on May 5—he said he will focus on issues like crime, blight, and economic development while the board searches for a successor. WIFR
- ➤ New Rockford City Council members took office on Monday as Jaime Salgado, Dawn Granath and 21-year-old Tamir Bell—Rockford’s youngest alderman—joined the team to boost local work. They said they plan to repave sidewalks, trim trees and address national policy impacts while preparing for more votes next week. WIFR
