COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Benzo, a friendly 2-year-old pit bull terrier mix, is ready for adoption now at Winnebago County Animal Services (4517 N. Main St. in Rockford), where his calm manners and love for snuggles make him a promising new companion.  WIFR
  • The Rockford Park District and 5th Ward Alderman Gabrielle Torina launched the new 5th Ward Walkers walking program today at the Clarence Hicks Sports Complex, offering music-themed sessions & group walking to help residents and seniors build connections and stay active.  Rockford Register Star

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Curran's Orchard in Rockford says the proposed 5-megawatt solar farm near its location at 6141 Kilburn Ave will be reviewed by the county board on May 13, as the orchard warns the development could hurt its seasonal business and rural appeal.  Rockford Register Star
  • North Main Market Co. will host an open house for food vendors and potential partners on Monday, June 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 2640 N. Main St.—the event previews updated plans for a food hall and greenhouse now set to open in spring 2027.  Rock River Current

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rockford has 28 designated local landmarks plus six historic districts that add extra protection and financial incentives for renovations; any changes now need approval by the Historic Preservation Commission. Notable sites include Lincoln Middle School built in 1925 and other historic properties across the city.  Rock River Current
  • The Rockford Area Arts Council announced Monday that local artists and organizations received microgrants up to $500 for creative projects through its newly renamed Marin Mazzie Action Grants program (supporting theatre, dance, music, public art, and more), with new applications opening Sep. 1.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Following repairs on May 11, Cherry Valley Public Works issued a boil order for Valley View and Penfield Crossing neighborhoods to secure safe water; residents are advised to boil water (for at least five minutes) until the pressure is restored. The village will update the community when the order is lifted.  WIFR
  • Drivers must find detours when crews begin replacing seven pipe culverts along Roscoe Road from Route 2 to Clearwing Lane starting May 18 — the work is expected to finish by June 5 depending on weather.  WIFR
  • Rockford City Council delayed a vote on a proposal by Midwest Yard Holdings to convert Riverview Mobile Home Park into an RV park on Monday night + residents spoke against the plan and urged more time for community discussions.  WIFR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Frank Nicolosi — a longtime member for 37 years — was elected Region 1 Trustee for the Illinois State Medical Society today; his term extends through April 2027 at the annual meeting held locally at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford.  Rockford Register Star
  • Health experts and UW Health doctor Greg DeMuri warn that warmer winters and wetter springs are triggering an earlier tick season in the Midwest, which puts families at risk for Lyme disease. They urge everyone to take precautions (such as thorough tick checks) when spending time outdoors this spring and summer.  WIFR

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Last Monday, a City Council committee approved incentives for Hillwood to build a 250,000-335,000 sqft industrial facility on land south of U.S. Route 20 near Chicago-Rockford International Airport — public improvements funded by a state grant and TIF funds will support the $25 million project starting this summer.  Rock River Current
