COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Roscoe Gardening Club and Rockton United Methodist Church have joined to launch a community garden at 102 W. Chapel that will grow vegetables to help feed local families and food pantries — volunteers will hold the first planting day on May 15, which is free and open to the public. The project received donations from local sources, including $2,250 from Slabaugh Services and $1,000 from an anonymous donor.  WIFR
  • The Roscoe Gardening Club and Rockton United Methodist Church have launched a community garden to donate produce to local food banks. The project was funded by a grant and donations—local leaders pushed it through quickly—and they expect to expand if it proves successful.  WTVO

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Winnebago County Coroner’s Office identified 40 year old Corey Carter—riding his motorcycle westbound on West Lane Road—as the victim of a crash on Saturday, May 10, in Machesney Park; emergency crews pronounced him dead at 7:21 p.m. after he sustained blunt trauma to the head and chest, and investigations are ongoing.  Rockford Register Star

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Pomodoro Italian eatery in Loves Park announced it will close permanently after Saturday, May 24th. The restaurant — which opened in 2021 at 6500 E. Riverside Blvd — expressed gratitude for the memories shared with its community.  WTVO
  • Today, the Amazon Air Hub in Rockford marks five years of growth as it now handles up to 10 flights and 300,000 packages a day—up from a single flight a decade ago. The facility employs over 1,100 workers—its local transit partnership offers free rides—and holds a five-year contract to boost service and capacity further.  WIFR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Several Rockford high school students from East, Guilford and Jefferson built three new homes with Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity — learning carpentry skills as part of their school’s construction trades programs — to provide families with safe, affordable, healthy housing.  WIFR

  • The Illinois Department of Public Health reported that a mosquito pool collected in Rockford on May 9 tested positive for West Nile virus on May 12 — the first such case in the state.  WIFR
