COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, Dunkin’ Donuts locations hosted Cop on a Rooftop where local police engaged with the community and collected donations for Special Olympics Illinois from 5 a.m. to noon. Donors received a free donut coupon.  WIFR
  • Local veterans and Rosie-the-Riveters will leave Harlem High School Sunday, May 17 for a four-day trip to Washington D.C. to visit war memorials, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial — a key stop on the tour, and return Wednesday, May 20 for a hero’s homecoming and Victory Parade in their 17th annual event.  WIFR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A family-owned restaurant will fill the former Taco John’s at 3007 N. Main St. in the North End — renovations that began Thursday, May 14 are expected to take six to seven months while the family plans to reveal the new concept later.  Rock River Current

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rockford marine veteran Noah Currier will premiere his award-winning documentary Sum Function at Hard Rock Casino on May 30 at 7 p.m. The film follows the nation’s only all-veteran wheelchair rugby team and shares personal stories of recovery and teamwork.  WIFR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Harlem School District finalizes a consolidation plan that will close Maple Elementary & Olson Park Elementary in fall 2026. The district is shifting bus routes and reassigning roles while limiting layoffs through attrition, with changes taking effect next school year.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Region 1 Planning Council received $500,000 from IDOT to study pedestrian and bicycle safety near Harlem High School and local schools. The study will examine drop-off operations and crosswalk conditions, with a final report due by fall.  WIFR
  • Legal professionals gathered Friday in Rockford for the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s annual Ethics Conference to discuss fairness, accountability, and job stress while sharing ideas to boost ethical legal practices.  WIFR

HEALTH NEWS

  • UW Health advises residents to follow lawn mower safety tips to prevent injuries. They warn against using mowers when distracted, under the influence, or near children and recommend checking for hazards & wearing protective gear before mowing.  WIFR
  • Wesley Willows held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 14 to mark the opening of its eight-week CNA Training Academy at 4141 N. Rockton Avenue in Rockford. The program, funded by a local donation, prepares students for the Illinois Certified Nursing Assistant exam.  WIFR

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Teachers turned pitmasters join to offer a weekly backyard-style barbecue at Baseball Tap Bar and Grill in Cherry Valley. Their new partnership, led by owner Ryan Spears and former teacher Will Hendrickson, will serve direct-heat dishes from noon to 7 p.m. on Fridays through the end of May and on Saturdays after Memorial Day.  Rock River Current

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Lafayette Apartments in downtown has renovated the nearly century-old Lafayette Hotel — originally home to vaudeville actors — into 54 affordable units for residents earning 60% or less of the area's median income, and leasing is underway with full occupancy expected by the end of June.  Rock River Current
