  • On May 16, local law enforcement staffed Dunkin’ locations in Rockford and Machesney Park to collect funds for Special Olympics programming in Illinois—donors received free donut coupons with free coffee for $10 contributions while Dunkin’ pledged $15,000 to the cause.  WIFR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A school bus and two vehicles were involved in a crash near the intersection of Mulford and Guilford roads in Rockford today—witnesses said the other vehicles sustained slight damage, no students were injured, and students were transferred to another bus as authorities began an investigation.  WIFR

  • VASA Fitness is converting the former Hilander grocery store at Brynwood Square on North Mulford Road into a new fitness center in Rockford—preliminary work includes raising the roof by four feet while the club has not yet broken ground and a full permit is still pending.  Rock River Current

CRIME NEWS

  • Loves Park Police arrested 40-year-old Mehmed Hromadzic on May 15 at 7:30 p.m. after waking him in his white Honda Pilot at a Road Ranger on East Riverside Boulevard and finding a loaded handgun, cocaine, and drug paraphernalia—he now faces multiple charges.  WTVO
  • Rockford deputies arrested two protesters Friday afternoon near the 500 block of Coleman Center Drive when they refused to leave the private property—both were charged with criminal trespassing.  WTVO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Constance Lane Elementary School started a soccer club *Soka Umoja* to help more than 150 East African refugee students adjust to American school expectations using soccer as a bridge. Assistant principal Mitch Wilson and refugee Emmanuel Kuzika report that after ten weeks the club has boosted student focus and engagement in class.  WTVO
  • Roberta 'Lynn' Mohamed, a 72-year-old student, completed her Associate of Arts degree at Rock Valley College after a 50-year journey of going back to school. She delivered the commencement speech and will move to Springfield—where she plans to work in state politics.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 60 prosecutors gathered in Rockford on Friday afternoon at the annual ethics conference hosted by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney's Office — its 16th year of training on ethics and mental health resources. The event stressed that prosecutors are held to high standards and offered a forum to discuss challenges like case workload and recruitment.  WIFR

HEALTH NEWS

  • UW Health Kids urged parents to ensure children wear helmets while riding bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters this summer because nearly 70% of emergency room visits at American Family Children’s Hospital involved kids without helmets+ experts advise that adults model proper helmet use to reduce head injuries.  WIFR
