- ➤ A GoFundMe to support the family of educator Heidi Dettman, who lost her battle with cancer, has raised over $23,000 as of noon May 19. The fundraiser, launched last Friday, aims to meet a $25,000 goal to help her husband + three young children. WIFR

- ➤ Residents and council member Gina Meeks raised safety concerns after a fatal weekend crash at the Harlem Boulevard & Auburn Street intersection, as traffic engineer Jeremy Carter will review potential fixes at a 5:30 p.m. meeting tonight at Rockford Country Club. WIFR

- ➤ Six films from Sundance will be shown at 815HORTS on Nov. 13-14, 2026. Local organizers will share screening details soon as they join Sundance+815HORTS to bring global stories to our community. WIFR
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Rockford City Council approved selling $103M in bonds on May 18 to finance an expansion of Hard Rock Casino that will add a 215-225 room hotel and 15,000 sqft conference center near the casino. The project (expected to create 100 permanent jobs and boost tourism) will start construction soon. Rockford Register Star
- ➤ Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara said Hillwood will develop a 330,000 sqft speculative industrial building near the airport to boost job growth. Groundbreaking is planned by the end of June with the first tenant expected in April 2027 — the project will support economic expansion in our community. WIFR
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Rockford Public Schools board approved Tuesday night an amendment giving incoming superintendent Larry Huff five extra transition days before his official July 1 start — extra time to address district restructuring and staffing challenges. WIFR
- ➤ Staff, students and alumni toured the Hemlock Elementary building on Monday before its transfer is finalized, after an audit found only one campus is needed. Starting in the fall, all students will meet at the N. Bell School Road building where renovations are underway. WIFR

- ➤ In 2025, the FDA inspected 12 companies in Winnebago County, a 500% increase over 2024 numbers. Eight companies met regulations while four were advised to take voluntary corrective measures in sectors such as food, cosmetics, drugs, and biologics. Rockford Sun
- ➤ The city's Zoning Board of Appeals approved a special-use permit for University Hill, a planned mixed-use development near Rockford University with up to 350 apartments & retail spaces. The proposal will next be considered by the City Council’s Code and Regulation Committee on Tuesday, May 26 at City Hall. Rock River Current

- ➤ A Winnebago County resident suspected of contracting hantavirus after cleaning a home with rodent droppings tested negative on May 12, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported; no further action is needed as locals are reminded to safely manage rodent droppings (risk remains very low). - ➤ Alden Park Strathmoor, managed by Alden Realty Services since May 8, 2000, scored two stars on its CMS rating in the first quarter of 2026—a score below the state average. The nursing home averaged 147.2 residents per day with $115,265 in fines. Rockford Sun
- ➤ Medicaid spending for Medical And Surgical Supplies in Rockford surged 94.3% in 2024, with providers billing $582,919 compared to 2023; the category ranked eighth among Medicaid reimbursements, marking a notable shift in local healthcare funding. Rockford Sun
