  • VetsRoll 2026 returned to Machesney Park on May 21 after its display at Progressive Field (honoring local veterans and celebrating community spirit).  WIFR
  • Local veterans propose building the LZ Spirit memorial off the LZ Peace Memorial — it will honor chaplains like Father Vincent Capridanno, Father Lt. Col. Joseph Sheehan, and Chaplain Col. Steve Cooper. The project is in the proposal stage and awaits further planning.  WIFR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chicago Rockford International Airport will launch seasonal international vacation flights in early 2027, offering trips to Cancun (starting Jan. 23), Punta Cana (starting Jan. 24) and a new Costa Rica destination (starting Feb. 5) for local travelers.  WIFR
  • Stellantis unveiled its $70B five-year turnaround plan last Thursday in Auburn Hills, with nine new vehicles under $40K for North America & Jeep model production at the Belvidere plant set to begin in June 2028.  WIFR
  • Sassy Mac Boys, a Rockford restaurant that began as a food truck, announced on Wednesday it will open a second location on June 20 at CherryVale Mall to fill the former Wetzel’s Pretzels space and test a small 300 sqft concept as it prepares to franchise.  Rock River Current

CULTURE NEWS

  • Students at Stenstrom Boys and Girls Club unveiled two new murals Thursday after months of collaboration with local artists — the projects focused on youth empowerment, identity, and community with guidance from Jenny Mathews and Jesse Leachy.  WIFR
  • Alchemy at Aldeen launches RockVinia, a free summer concert series offering live music, chef-crafted cuisine and signature cocktails starting May 27 — events continue every Wednesday on the patio at 1902 Reid Farm Road with reservations encouraged.  Rockford Register Star
  • Today, the Midwestern Biennial opens at Rockford Art Museum—featuring nearly 100 works by contemporary artists from eight states including nine local entries—and runs through Sept. 27. HEALTH NEWS

  • RAMP Disability Resources & Services is offering area residents with permanent speech disabilities free communication devices in Winnebago, DeKalb, Stephenson and Boone counties through the ITAC program. Applicants must have active phone service and certification from a speech-language pathologist.  WIFR
  • In Rockford, Alex Broches, owner of The Junk Removal Dudes, said hoarding cases among seniors sharply increased since COVID to five or six calls a week, urging neighbors to check on isolated individuals and set small goals to reduce clutter as doom shopping adds to the problem.  WIFR

  • Aldeen Golf Club completed a $2M bunker renovation funded by the Norris and Margaret Aldeen Foundation plus the Engen family on May 21, 2026. The upgrade improved drainage and now offers premium white sand while the club will host a Bunker Buster Discount Day on June 3.  Rock River Current
  • Hidden Creek Estates cut the ribbon on May 21, 2026, unveiling five wine barrel-shaped suites on its 77-acre property in Roscoe — climate-controlled units with a cozy king bed, private bath, and shared infrared sauna for a boutique retreat.   • Hidden Creek Estates celebrated the opening of five wine-barrel tiny homes on Thursday, May 21 in Roscoe (13276 White School Road). The rental homes feature king-size beds, full bathrooms, climate control and private patios.  WIFR
