- ➤ Rockford will honor military service with its annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday at 9 a.m. at 7th Street and 6th Avenue + the parade will end at Veterans Memorial Hall while roads close at 7 a.m. and parked cars will be towed by 8 a.m. WTVO

- ➤ Curran’s Orchard opened today for its summer season and will operate with limited hours on Fridays from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.—selling donuts, raw honey, apple cider, dressings, salsas, jams and other gift items at 6385 Kilburn Ave in Rockford. WIFR
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Wisconsin man, Turhane Henderson, pleaded guilty on May 22 to two counts of criminal sexual assault for raping a woman in a Rockford parking lot on Feb. 25 and was sentenced to 14 years behind bars with consecutive seven-year terms plus a mandatory three-year supervised release. WIFR
- ➤ Rockford Police arrested three teens after an alleged armed robbery on May 14 when a man reported that his phone and wallet were stolen as one teen was seen holding a firearm near an apartment complex — a search warrant later led officers to the suspects, who now face charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and related offenses. - ➤ Rockford police arrested Demarius Styles, 33, for his alleged role in a 40-person brawl on April 13 at around 7:30 p.m. on the 400 block of South New Towne Road, where a 61-year-old man was injured when Styles repeatedly punched him — he faces charges of aggravated battery, home invasion causing injury and mob action causing violence. - ➤ Seven abstract artists opened the Kith and Kin Art Collective at 510 E. State St. in downtown Rockford, revamping the space with open lofts and brick walls to showcase affordable original art. The gallery will host live painting, art classes, and pop-up events this weekend — including a coffee event today—to invite the community to explore creative works. Rock River Current

- ➤ In 2023-24, 24.7% of Prairie Hill Community Consolidated School District 133 students (covering Winnebago County) failed the ELA portion of the Illinois Assessment of Readiness test, a 1.1% increase from the previous year according to the Illinois State Board of Education. Rockford Sun

- ➤ May is Childhood Drowning Prevention Month and Rockford officials remind parents to help children learn basic swimming and water safety skills. Healthy and Safe Swimming Week runs from May 19th to 25th and urges families to secure pools, empty buckets, and watch children closely—simple steps to reduce drowning risks and waterborne illnesses.
