- ➤ The Rock River Valley Blood Center launched its Save Lives, See Live Music drive at its Rockford and Freeport sites Tuesday and will run through the last week of May to address low donor rates. Donors will be entered into a drawing for concert tickets for shows such as Rod Stewart with Cheap Trick — walk-ins are accepted and appointments can be made online or by phone. WTVO
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Daisean Davis, 22, was sentenced to 21 years in prison with an extra 3 years on parole for robbing Schnucks Grocery Store on February 11th at 4:45 a.m. in Rockford and attacking an employee with a hammer—surveillance video showed him striking the worker during the robbery involving an accomplice armed with a pistol. - ➤ A 22-year-old Rockford man was sentenced to 24 years in prison for his role in a 2022 armed robbery at Schnucks — he hit an employee with a hammer during the incident — and must serve the sentences consecutively with three years of mandatory supervised release. WIFR
- ➤ James Purifoy, 50, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a federal arson charge for setting fire to his Rockford business, 15th & Chris — he was indicted on May 20 for the January incident and remains held on a DUI charge with a federal court appearance scheduled for July 17 at 10 a.m. WIFR
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford is hosting Tuesday Evening in the Gardens, a weekly summer concert series where local, regional and touring musicians perform in the serene Japanese gardens—attendees can set up with blankets, lawn chairs or small tables starting at 5 p.m. The shows open at 5:45 p.m. with the opener and the headliner takes the stage at 6:30 p.m.—tickets are sold on-site while parking fills quickly. - ➤ The summer season for drive-in movie theaters is underway near Rockford—five theaters within an hour offer families outdoor film showings with unique screening events and concession options. WTVO
- ➤ Music on the Mall will begin on June 6 at Edgebrook Shopping Center — regional bands will perform every Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with food and drinks available from Lucha Cantina and Cork, Keg and Spirits — as the outdoor concert series continues through September 5 except July 4. - ➤ The sheriff's office started a pilot program using Axon's Draft One+ a tool that uses body camera audio to write a first draft of reports. Officers then checked each report+ to make sure it was correct. Rock River Current
