COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 29 at 8 a.m., 15 Lifescape Community Services volunteers worked with Home Depot to pick up supplies at 1580 W. Lane Road in Machesney Park and build garden boxes for 20 older adults in need. Each volunteer visited two or three homes and filled the boxes with flowers or vegetables using a Home Depot Foundation grant — tools and seeds to ease gardening — to assist local seniors.  WIFR

CRIME NEWS

  • Michael Buckley, 40, was arrested on May 28 in Rockford for two alleged shooting incidents reported on May 17 near Cameron Avenue and on May 25 near Royal Avenue + video footage and witness accounts linked him to the crimes, and he faces charges including unauthorized firearm possession and reckless discharge.  WTVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rockford Art Museum is hosting Analog: Rockford’s Decade of Creative Rebellion—a free exhibition that highlights local art and creative movements from the 90s. The show will run until September and includes monthly lectures beginning June 26 at 6 p.m.  WIFR
  • Tom Asher has crafted violins in a basement workshop in a quiet wooded neighborhood on Rockford’s south side using skills honed as a musician, woodworker, and artist—he is also known for repairing local stringed instruments and supporting the Rockford Symphony Orchestra.  Northern Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Administrators at Kinnikinnick Community Consolidated School District 131 earned an average of $119,086 in 2024 which ranks them 283rd in Illinois. The district in Winnebago County, with 1,712 enrolled students, saw salaries rise 5.1% from last year — averaging 190 students per administrator.  Rockford Sun
  • The Rock River Valley Tooling and Machining Association hosted its apprentice graduation at Aldeen Golf Course in Rockford on May 28—where 16 apprentices earned journeyman credentials in trades like CNC precision machinist, gear cutting, metal fabricator/welder and tool and die maker—after finishing their training. The program included 600 classroom hours at Rock Valley College and between 8,000 and 10,000 on‐the‐job hours—numbers that show strong local manufacturing skills—while the event also featured a dinner, social hour and keynote speech.  WIFR

  • The Greater Rockford Airport Authority Board of Commissioners named Mike Schablaske as its new Chairman, replacing Paul R. Cicero who led the board for 12 years. Schablaske and other new officers will take office on June 1 — the board highlighted Cicero's key role in growing both cargo and passenger services.  WIFR
  • Loves Park residents paid about $12.3 million in sales taxes in 2024—ranking the city 86th among Illinois municipalities and marking a drop from 85th the previous year.  Rockford Sun
