COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Rockford announced road closures for the IRONMAN 70.3 race on Sunday, June 14 (details available online) affecting downtown, the riverfront, north Rockford, Winnebago County, and Rockton, and residents are urged to plan alternate routes.  Rockford Sun

CULTURE NEWS

  • Abby Lee Miller met dozens of local dancers and fans on Saturday at Willowbrook Middle School in South Beloit for her signature technique training and audition-style workshop hosted by Miss Andrea's Dance Factory (featuring warmups and flexibility work). Attendees asked questions (about professional dance training) following the session.  WIFR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, 32 high school students signed with 11 area employers through Blackhawk Technical College’s Manufacturing Signing Day, letting them secure internships, apprenticeships or full-time positions while attending school, and the Stateline Manufacturing Alliance awarded five students scholarships (covering part of fall and spring costs).  WIFR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rockford hosted its first Mental Health Met Gala Saturday evening to help end the stigma around mental health and connect community members with local resources; organizer Kevin Thomas said the event may become an annual celebration of healing and hope.  WIFR

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Guests packed Hurricane Harbor on Saturday, May 30 as it launched its season at 7820 Cherryvale N Blvd in Cherry Valley. The water park features thrilling slides, a large wave pool, and a Kids’ Area, and will begin daily weekday operations on June 13.  WIFR
