Good morning, Rockford.

Rockton and Roscoe kicked off the second annual Rock Snake Competition on Sunday as residents added rocks at Talcott Library and Harlem-Roscoe Fire Station 1 to build the longest rock snake.

The contest runs until September 1 and Roscoe’s Gardening Club hopes to beat last year’s totals—Rockton’s 378 rocks and Roscoe’s 327 rocks.

Illinois legislators passed a record-high $55.1 billion budget on Sunday—this plan includes $275 million for the Rockford to Chicago rail project expected to be operational by 2027, funds to redevelop the Singer Mental Health Center, and increased support for local K-12 schools, while critics warn it will bring new taxes.

A new list names seven top fishing spots in the Rockford area for summer.

It names Pierce Lake at Rock Cut State Park in Loves Park, the Rock River near Rockton Dam, Baumann Park Lake in Cherry Valley, Four Lakes Forest Preserve in Pecatonica, Spencer Park in Belvidere, Shabbona Lake south of Shabbona and spots along the Pecatonica River—to help local anglers choose a spot.
