ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Several fire crews responded to a house fire on West Hononegah Road in Rockton on Tuesday and put the blaze out in five minutes while no one was injured.  WTVO

CRIME NEWS

  • Rockford police say they have received more calls about ATVs being driven illegally on city streets and will offer a $200 reward for tips that lead to arrests or confiscations—reminding residents that these vehicles are not allowed on public roads.  WIFR
  • A 21-year-old from Rockford named Steven Brown faces multiple drug charges after police executed a search on June 3 on 22nd Street—finding two loaded handguns, over 83 grams of cocaine, ecstasy pills, ammunition, and cash; he is now held at the Winnebago County jail pending his court appearance.  WIFR
  • Victor Ortega, 41, turned himself in to police for domestic violence charges stemming from a May 22 incident in Rockton—he was booked into Winnebago County Jail at 12:35 a.m. on June 3 and is set to attend his first hearing later today.  WTVO
  • Rockford police arrested Pierre Watson, 31, on charges including weapons possession by a felon, possession of a firearm without a FOID, driving with a suspended license, and other violations after he tried to flee during a turn signal stop on June 1 at 1:41 a.m.—his Chevrolet Monte Carlo smelled of cannabis, had an open bottle of Hennessy, and a loaded pistol was found during the search.  WTVO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rockford School District 205 administrators earned an average salary of $105,766 in 2024—ranking them 366th lowest in the state, according to the Illinois State Board of Education. The district saw a 1.9% salary increase from 2023 and had about 162 students per administrator in the 2023-24 year.  Rockford Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Tom McNamara criticized Governor JB Pritzker’s plan to transfer the 1% grocery tax to municipalities—bringing nearly $800,000 per year to Rockford’s General Fund for police and fire services—and warned that if local leaders do not vote to continue the tax by October 1, the revenue will be lost when the tax is eliminated on January 1, 2026.  WTVO
  • Sheila Kitzman, a Rockford-area pharmacist, supports new state rules that will curb the power of pharmacy benefit managers and help small local pharmacies keep costs down—lawmakers passed the bill in the House and Senate, and it now awaits Gov. JB Pritzker’s signature. This measure, which includes rebate transparency and a fee on PBMs, is expected to bring relief to families and independent pharmacies.  WIFR

  • This summer, Rockford residents can visit Macktown Forest Preserve to learn about local history, fish at spots along the Rock and Kishwaukee Rivers, hike trails at Rock Cut State Park, and play golf on nearly 20 public courses nearby.
