COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Remedies Renewing Lives held its 18th annual golf fundraiser on Thursday at Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford to raise awareness about domestic violence and addiction and to remove stigma for those affected. Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara and President Gary Halbach said the event was part of a community effort that provides shelters, counseling, and treatment services — steps meant to improve safety and support for local residents.  WIFR
  • The annual 911 Run will take place tomorrow with the event beginning at 8:30 a.m.—the 3 km race starts at 9:11 a.m. at Fire Station 5 on Trainer Road and will raise funds for fire prevention education and Camp I Am Me.  WIFR

  • Midwest Aero Support celebrated 35 years in business on June 5 at its facility in Machesney Park—founded in Rockford in 1990, the company has provided repair and manufacturing services for 125 customers worldwide and is working with two major airlines on a new onboard wheelchair to meet ADA rules coming next year.  WIFR

CRIME NEWS

  • A Chicago man, Marco Garcia-Limon, 43, was arrested in Ogle County after a domestic violence call on the 300 block of Misty Meadow Lane in Davis Junction led to a victim being hospitalized at Javon Bea Mercyhealth Hospital-Riverside in Rockford — he awaits a pretrial detention hearing.  WTVO
  • Illinois State Police Troop 1 reported 91 crashes in May and issued more than 1,000 citations—622 for speeding, 92 for distracted driving, and 93 for seat belt violations—in eight counties while making 22 DUI arrests and aiding 278 motorists.  WIFR

  • United Lutheran Church will host a public concert on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. featuring members of the Rockford Chapter of the American Guild of Organists playing a new Allen digital organ—replacing an instrument used for over two decades.  Northern Public Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from Marshall Middle School in Rockford won the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation STEM Challenge in Baltimore after designing a device to reduce pollution. The all-girl team called Team Zip Zoom, made up of five sixth graders, took home a trophy, a signed baseball, and a jersey.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Illinois Department of Transportation is inviting the public to submit original photos that show how transportation connects communities as part of its annual contest. Photos must be submitted online from today to June 20 and finalists will be posted for public voting — the winning entry will be featured on the agency’s Facebook page with a certificate of recognition.  WIFR
  • The City of Rockford earned the GFOA Triple Crown Award for Excellence in Financial Management on May 6 and updated residents on a balanced budget, new ward maps, and housing programs.
