COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new all-weather FlexCourt is being installed today at Andrews Park at 850 N. Central Ave. thanks to the VanVleet Family Foundation—staff will begin work at 8 a.m. and complete the court by 1 p.m. for a community celebration with food from Olivo Tacos and Willyum's Dairy Fair.  Rock River Current

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rockford Jams is a summer concert series at Sinnissippi Park Music Shell that brings live music on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout summer, with special shows on select Fridays and Saturdays. The series features local opening acts starting at 6 p.m., free entry for most concerts, and $5 prime tickets with $20 VIP options—guests are encouraged to arrive early for seating.  WIFR
  • Poetically Yours features the poem 'The Wild and Windy Days' by Paula Coulahan, a retired Rockford teacher who now leads a student newspaper at Welsh Middle School & works with local advocacy groups. The series spotlights northern Illinois poets and highlights Coulahan’s contributions to the local arts scene.  Northern Public Radio
  • 815 BlackFest will take place from 3-7 p.m. on June 29 at the Stephenson Business Center at 730 N. Church Street and will celebrate Black culture under the theme 'Celebrate Black. Build Community.' The free festival will feature live entertainment, local vendors, youth and family activities, and wellness resources focused on six areas including mental health, hunger, domestic violence, education, financial literacy, and homelessness.  WIFR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seven individuals who completed the Project SEARCH job training program were honored on Thursday at Mercyhealth’s Javon Bea Hospital—Riverside. Three graduates have already found work while one will soon start as a paraprofessional with preschoolers.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rockford residents with worn American flags can retire them properly during Flag Week from Monday, June 9 through Friday, June 13 by dropping them off at the County Clerk's office at 404 Elm Street or Veterans Memorial Hall and Museum at 211 N. Main Street—free 8 x 12 USA stick flags are available while supplies last.  WIFR
  • The Illinois Department on Aging urges residents to learn warning signs of elder abuse such as unexplained injuries, behavioral changes, and sudden changes in bank accounts. Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be observed on June 15—residents can report suspected abuse through the state hotline.  WIFR

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In April 2024, the Rockford area had a record low of 141 homes for sale in Boone, Winnebago and Ogle counties — nine fewer than the previous record. Realtors said homes sold in under 13 days because homeowners held on to low interest rates, leaving few options for buyers.  Rock River Current
