  • Rockton Summerpalooza began on June 7 on the 100 block of W. Main Street with live music featuring headliner Rock 5ive Band and opener Red Ball Jet for a Patriotic-themed night—two additional themed events are set for July 12 and August 9.  WIFR

CRIME NEWS

  • Bertha Ceballos held an event at the Ross Pearson VFW Post 5149 on June 7 to raise funds for a tombstone for her son Joey Torres (shot and killed in 2023) and said she attended every court date, including a hearing scheduled for Aug. 11, as she pursued justice.  WIFR
  • Rockford police reported that two teens were injured by gunfire on Saturday at the 1200 block of Revell Avenue — one 19-year-old sustained life-threatening wounds and an 18-year-old was treated for gunshot injuries — with officials advising residents to avoid the area.  WTVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rockford celebrated Pride Month today with its second annual parade that started at East State and Third Street, crossed the Rock River, and ended on Wyman Street. Multiple vendors and local groups hosted an afterparty and noted that the event has grown significantly since it began in 2019—with many supporters, allies, and families joining the festivities.  WTVO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the BMO Center in downtown Rockford, 370 East High School graduates received their diplomas this weekend—Principal Jim Parker, who taught many of these students at Lincoln Middle School, called the moment bittersweet as the school revived the cap decoration tradition. One graduate, Vanesa Guerrero, said she will attend Rock Valley College before transferring to Northern Illinois University to join the Medical Laboratory Sciences program.  WIFR
  • South Beloit Community Unit School District 320 administrators earn an average of $98,836 per year, ranking 250th lowest in the state according to the Illinois State Board of Education — this salary increased 5.5% from last year but is still 17.2% below the state average. The district enrolled 912 students for the 2023-24 school year with roughly 91 students for every administrator compared to a statewide ratio of 135 to 1.  Rockford Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over a million cage-free brown eggs from August Egg Company were recalled after a salmonella outbreak sickened 79 people and led to 21 hospitalizations. Select stores in Rockford had the tainted eggs for sale — the recalled eggs were sold between Feb 3 and May 15.  WTVO
