COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Illinois’ first Hope House in Rockford opened on June 25th to give teens who struggled in foster care a stable family environment. The five-bedroom home houses four girls with support from foster parents, youth care workers, and an on-site therapist—an innovative model that officials hope will expand statewide.  Rock River Current
  • Illinois is using a nearly $930,000 state grant to fund window replacements and electrical repairs in nearly 150 homes at the Central Terrace Coop housing community at 1121 Bishop Washington Avenue in Rockford. The resident led project, established in 1954, will finish upgrades by November 1—ensuring better conditions for local residents.  WTVO
  • Ham radio operators in Winnebago County will test emergency communications during a nationwide exercise from June 28th to 29th using only emergency power for their equipment. Several clubs will hold Field Day events starting at 1 p.m. on June 28th in Rockford at YMCA Camp Winnebago — more than 2,000 operators are licensed countywide.  WTVO

CRIME NEWS

  • Rockford Police arrested 27-year-old Kenneth Latin on June 23 around midnight for allegedly attacking a sleeping man near Jonathan Avenue—witnesses said Latin punched the victim multiple times, leaving him with visible injuries that required treatment at Swedish American Hospital, and Latin was later taken into custody when he returned to his home.  WTVO
  • Police responded to a shooting on Rockford's east side early Wednesday morning on Forest View Road and Waukegan Drive where an adult male was wounded and is expected to survive—no arrests have been made.  WTVO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Starting July 1, Illinois will raise its gas tax by 1.3 cents per gallon to $0.483, with diesel reaching $0.558 — state lawmakers say the funds will repair roads while Rockford drivers worry about rising costs.  WIFR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rockford University broke ground on a new multipurpose turf athletic field on June 25 to support football, soccer, flag football and intramural events. The project is funded by a $4.3 million grant from the Illinois Board of Higher Education and will be finished before students return in the fall—Byrne & Jones Sports Construction is handling the work.  Rock River Current

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Christopher T. Baer (PE) is named the new executive director for Four Rivers Sanitation Authority and will begin his role on July 1. He served as interim director earlier this year and led major construction projects that maintained the agency's high standards for the sewer system.  WIFR

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC confirmed Illinois’ first human case of West Nile virus in 2025—a patient from Southern Illinois who was hospitalized—and urged residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites; the virus was also reported on May 9 in Rockford.  WIFR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rockford native Fred VanVleet will sign a 2-year, $50M extension with the Houston Rockets, allowing him to enter the free agency market in 2026. He won an NBA title in 2019 with the Raptors and recently headlined Rockford’s annual Diamonds Storytelling Gala.  WTVO
