COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rockford Fire and Police departments are competing in a blood drive from July 14 to 18 to support the Rock River Valley Blood Center. Donors can visit the Downtown and Perryville centers from July 14 to 19 or the City of Rockford Wellness Center on July 18 from 8:00 a.m. to noon to vote for their favorite team and receive a free 'Who Has More Heart' t-shirt.  WIFR
  • Volunteers from 815 Stonecrafters cleaned 32 headstones at Cedar Bluff Cemetery on Sunday to honor Civil War veterans — a project the group has led since May. Founder Janie Jenkin said the work received thanks from families out of state — showing the lasting impact of their efforts.  WTVO
  • Rockford’s strict food inspection rules forced organizers to cancel the Chow Down food truck festival as vendors could not cover high travel costs and meet tough safety standards — the nonprofit Mexico Americanos Saliendo Adelante will host a Tamale Fest on September 6th at a U-Haul parking lot on E. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rockford officials say a lane reduction at the Auburn Street roundabout cut accidents by 60% since 2024—Traffic and Development Engineer Jeremy Carter said DOT will review if the pilot program becomes permanent while drivers still risk safety when leaving the circle.  WIFR

CRIME NEWS

  • A Chicago man, John Davis, 21, was arrested on multiple charges after he punched a 69-year-old bus driver near Broadway and S. Fifth St on July 8—police said the driver ended up with a swollen eye and that Davis also spat on him during the incident.  WIFR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rockford officials said that about half of the materials in the new recycling bins are not recyclable because residents are adding items like clothing, cords, and plastic grocery bags—causing 50% of the waste to be sent back to the landfill—while the city plans an educational blitz to cut ineligible items to 25%.  WTVO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced Monday that the ATF will not send forced reset triggers—devices that change a semi-automatic gun into a machine gun—to Illinois following a lawsuit by his office and other states. Local reports show switch-related cases in Rockford have doubled among teenagers from 2022 to 2024.  WTVO
  • City Council members will review a $7.6 million contract with Stenstrom Excavation to start work on Davis Park with new paths, lighting, a skatepark, playground and a parking lot with EV charging— the Finance & Personnel Committee meets tonight and the full council will vote on July 21. Funding comes from city capital funds, a 2023 budget surplus and state support, and the upgrades are planned for completion by Ironman 70.3 in 2026.  Rock River Current
