  • Dozens of children and their families attended the second annual Play for Palestine event on Sunday hosted by Rockford for Palestine — the event began in early 2024 and aimed to provide a space to learn about Palestinian struggles and build community solidarity.  WIFR
  • Cherry Valley Elementary’s mobile block party will roll through local neighborhoods on Aug. 6 from 9:50 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering free backpacks, treats, and games while giving families a chance to meet school staff before the new school year starts on Aug. 14.  Rockford Register Star
  • Rock House Kids will host its second annual Back to School Community Health Fair on Aug 8 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 1325 7th St. School-age children with a parent are expected to receive free checkups + school supplies, eye exams, dental care and fresh produce while nearly 20 local groups and basketball player Isaiah Roby support the event.  Rockford Register Star

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two motorcycle crashes in Rockford resulted in deaths over the weekend, and local riders now stress the need to wear helmets, slow down at intersections and curves, and take proper training — they say these actions could help prevent further tragedies.  WIFR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Disco Chicken, a downtown Rockford restaurant known for its crispy chicken and rooftop events, celebrated its one-year anniversary last weekend with a three-day festival—featuring 50 DJs honoring the restaurant’s culture—and attracted customers with its popular menu that includes gluten free and vegan options.  WIFR
  • Hundreds filled Levings Park on Sunday, August 3rd for the Live at Levings Talent Show finale where contestants competed for a $1,000 prize and a $500 runner-up award—local sponsors helped boost the event's success.
