- ➤ Rockford Park District is replacing its 22-year-old inclusive 'Paulyground' at Alpine Park on 950 S. Alpine Road to improve safety, accessibility, and fun — construction will be complete by the end of the year with a celebration planned for spring 2026. Parents, Therapeutic Recreation staff, and community partners helped design the new playground with sensory-friendly and wheelchair-accessible features. WIFR
- ➤ Rockford Park District is replacing the 22-year-old playground at Paulyground—located at 950 S. Alpine Road—with new, wheelchair-accessible equipment, a We-Go-Swing, sensory-friendly areas, and a communication board, with work set to finish before year’s end using $1.36 million in funds, including $600,000 from a state grant. The park is named to honor Mike Pauly, a former landscape architect who championed inclusive play until his death in 2007. Rock River Current
- ➤ The City of Rockford will host a Splash Bash on August 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. at 1141 Cedar Street to celebrate 150 years of providing clean water; the free event will feature water-themed activities, including a hydrant party, an inflatable water slide, free Kona Ice treats (while supplies last) and trucks for kids to explore. - ➤ A man aged 22 died in a shooting on Rockford's southwest side Monday morning — police said he suffered life threatening injuries and no one was arrested. WIFR
- ➤ A 52-year-old Rockford man, Murphy Doss, was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder, second-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm after a shooting at a MaxMart on Kilburn Avenue on Sept. 27, 2024 that killed one man and seriously injured another — he faces a life sentence. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Rockford University and UIC Retzky College of Pharmacy announced a new accelerated program that will let pharmacy students earn a Bachelor of Science degree and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in seven years—students will study three years at Rockford University before transferring to UIC on one of its campuses. The program will save a year of tuition and help launch pharmacy careers as demand for pharmacists remains high. Rockford Register Star
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Swanson Road between Perryville Road and Belvidere Road will be closed to thru traffic for pipe culvert replacement work starting August 11th, and work is expected to complete on August 15th if weather permits—local traffic will have alternate access within the work limits. Winnebago County
- ➤ State highway crews in Seward will begin work on South Pecatonica Road on Monday, August 11 by widening shoulders and paving between US-20 and Edwardsville Road — the project is expected to finish by August 22 although weather may cause delays. Temporary lane closures will slow traffic during work hours. Winnebago County
