- ➤ Rockford will host Splash Bash on Aug. 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. at 1141 Cedar St. to mark 150 years of reliable water service—families will enjoy a hydrant party, an inflatable water slide, a Kona Ice truck offering free treats, a live DJ, and trucks for children to explore. Rockford Register Star
- ➤ Rockford’s Lyfe Cannabis Dispensary will host a free dog-friendly event on Aug. 10 from noon to 4 p.m. at 6774 Troy Dr—RSVP via the Lyfe App for a Dogwalkers tote and join in for live caricatures, treat stations including Dairyhaus dog ice cream, local food trucks, and fun giveaways, with a backup date on Aug. 17 if weather rules change. - ➤ Abby Kolthoff (16-year-old dual credit student) was crowned as Boone County Fair Queen on Aug. 5 at the Boone County Fairgrounds by 2024 queen Emma Walberg from among six contestants. - ➤ Loves Park Police warned residents on Aug 5 that thefts of Kia models made from 2011 to 2019 increased because thieves can bypass the traditional key ignition by tampering with the steering column—advising owners to use extra security measures such as steering wheel locks, alarms, or parking in safe areas. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kinnikinnick Community Consolidated School District 131 had an outstanding school debt of $5.7 million in fiscal year 2024 based on data from the Illinois State Board of Education—this amounts to about $330,722 per student. Rockford Sun

- ➤ Rockford’s oldest fire station on Rural Street will move to the former Magna grocery store lot on East State Street after the city council approved an engineering contract; the new site is expected to be ready in about two and a half years to improve emergency response on the growing east side—Logistics Chief Matt Cordonnier said the move will allow trucks faster access to major thoroughfares. - ➤ The Rockford Park District is hiring seasonal outdoor recreation and education instructors for field trips, camp programs and other activities at Atwood Park and Alpine Hills Adventure Park this summer.
