COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A public art installation honoring women's leadership celebrated its fifth anniversary on Saturday in Rockford—organizers hope the sculpture and its activity book teach young people about the struggles to win voting rights. Monday marks 105 years since the 19th Amendment changed voting rights for women.  WIFR
  • Hundreds gathered at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds despite high temperatures, and a well-attended rodeo drew crowds on Friday. Gates opened at noon today — the demolition derby is set for 2 p.m. before the fair ends at 6 p.m.  WIFR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jeremiah Development held a health fair for Rockford’s Coronado Haskell neighborhood on Saturday that provided blood pressure checks, elder care services, free haircuts, clothing, meals, and utility wagons given to the first 65 families—resources aimed at building vital community support. Executive Director Dee Valentino, who recently earned HUD certification, said the organization will offer future classes on homebuying, foreclosure, and finance management—plans that promise to expand help for local residents.  WIFR
