- ➤ Rock River Valley Pantry announced its annual Thanksgiving in August campaign to provide 250 families with a full Thanksgiving dinner while continuing to serve over 18,650 families for more than 40 years. The community is invited to donate—$450 for 10 families, $225 for five, $90 for two, or $45 for one—to help make a warm holiday meal possible for those in need. Rockford Register Star
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Markeeon Neal, a Rockford man, received a 10-year prison sentence and will serve a year of parole for delivering fentanyl that led to a fatal overdose on March 11 on Terra Cotta Avenue—prosecuted by McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi Freese as Crystal Lake police responded to the call. WTVO
- ➤ Jimmie Rogers pleaded guilty to Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm for shooting four people at the Onyx Bar and Grill in Machesney Park in February 2023—he avoids the attempted murder charge and will be sentenced on October 7th. WTVO

- ➤ Somnium will transform Sinnissippi Park into an immersive art experience featuring giant sculptures and interactive installations — the event will include mythic storytelling by local and international artists and run from Aug. 28 to 31. Rockford Register Star
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Rockford topped the list for affordable living in northern Illinois and Chicagoland—reporting a cost of living 5.3% below the national average and a population of 146,000. The study compared several mid-sized cities using data from public sources. WTVO

- ➤ Construction on East State Street starts Aug. 27 and will run nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. as crews patch, mill and resurface the road—covering the stretch from Rockford College Entrance Drive to Fairview Avenue; the $1.8 million project upgrades sidewalks, signals and the right turn lane and will finish in May 2026. - ➤ Since Aug. 25, the Belvidere Road Bridge over I-90 has been closed to drivers while crews repair the deck and seal the concrete — drivers are detoured via Swanson Road and Illinois Route 251 through mid-September. WIFR
