ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • First responders arrived in Loves Park after a two-car crash on Tuesday night around 6:58 p.m.—one vehicle was a silver Chevrolet sedan and the other a black Ford SUV—and both cars suffered severe front end damage with deployed air bags, with no word on injuries.  WTVO

CRIME NEWS

  • A Minnesota white supremacist was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder, hate crime, conspiracy and assault for beating a Jewish inmate at Thomson Penitentiary—another prisoner pleaded guilty and will be sentenced on October 9 for his role in the attack.  WTVO
  • Brandon Simonson, 41, was sentenced to life in prison for killing fellow inmate Matthew Phillips in March 2020 because of his Jewish faith — authorities said the attack was driven by antisemitism and a bid for prison gang membership.  WIFR

CULTURE NEWS

  • GoRockford is holding a press conference today at 10 a.m. behind 303 N. Main St to announce the expansion of the CRE8IV Sculpture Program—18 new sculptures will be installed and the Rockford Letters unveiled on the west bank of the Rock River.  Go Rockford
  • Somnium: The Book of the Hollow Earth will transform Sinnissippi Park with an immersive art experience that guides visitors along a nature hike featuring art installations and light displays; the event begins August 28th and runs until August 31st. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children and free for kids under six — a unique chance to enjoy community art.  WTVO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rockford unions are working to improve worker conditions by ensuring strong benefits like health care, retirement, and life insurance—a gap that local nonprofit Project First Rate highlights compared to non-union jobs. The group stresses that all workers should have the choice to join a union for better protections.  WIFR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Daniel J. Olson — with over 20 years of parks experience — started on August 11 as the new executive director of the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County and will lead 44 preserves and 11,600 acres as he prepares a three-year strategic plan. His first major project is designing a new facility at Severson Dells as he makes decisions on aging infrastructure while he and his wife search for a home in a tight market.  Rock River Current
