COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The annual Labor Day Parade in downtown Rockford will cause street closures beginning at 8 a.m. Monday as the event starts at 10 a.m. from 7th Street and 6th Avenue—its route goes north on 7th, west on State, and south on Wyman near Davis Park, so drivers should take alternate routes and avoid parked vehicles one hour before the event to prevent towing.  WIFR
  • A new community center has opened at 2501 Charles Street to give Rockford teens a safe place to learn, connect and get support after school—Stateline Youth for Christ runs the center near Rockford East High School and Lincoln Middle School and plans to add a gymnasium in its Phase Two development.  WIFR

  • Stephen Hedlund leads Rock Valley Stainless Tanks in Rockford where 14 workers use a 4 kilowatt laser and press brake to form gas tanks for classic cars—producing between 1,300 and 15,000 units a year—and he plans to expand operations to build hot rods in-house.  WTVO

CRIME NEWS

  • A woman was stabbed at Alpine Inn on East State Street yesterday around 12:20 p.m.—she was taken to a local hospital for treatment.  WTVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hard Rock Casino Rockford unveiled three custom slot machines themed for the Rockford Peaches that honor the historic All-American Girls Professional Baseball League team which won four championships. The machines are available exclusively at the casino—part of ongoing efforts to celebrate local sports history and mark the resurgence of women's baseball.  WTVO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Illinois Tollway expects heavy travel today with over 1.9 million vehicles and plans for more than 1.7 million on Tuesday. Construction is ongoing along the tollway — drivers are urged to slow down, obey speed limits, and follow detours while work zones remain active.  WIFR

  • Josh Martin, a Rockford swim coach at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA, is one of five finalists for the American Swim Coaches Association Impact Coach of the Year award—he was nominated by friends and community and will attend the ASCA World Clinic in Nevada in September where the winner will be announced.  WTVO
