- ➤ A 30-year-old Rockford woman named Sadie Turner faces additional drug charges for allegedly selling drugs while on pretrial release after police discovered over 70 grams of cannabis in an Aug. 19 search at the 600 block of Newport Avenue—her next hearing is set for Sept. 4. WIFR
- ➤ Rockford police arrested Terrance Walker, 60, on August 28 after he allegedly attacked a pregnant woman with a knife at Alpine Inn (incident began at 12:19 p.m.); officers said the victim sustained visible injuries and was taken to OSF Saint Anthony Hospital, and Walker was picked up near East State Street and Lynmar Court (at 12:36 p.m.). - ➤ Rockford police arrested Kenneth Sowells after searching a home on the 200 block of Cameron Avenue on August 28 and finding cocaine, cannabis, pills, methadone and THC wax + cash, and he is charged with possession with intent to deliver controlled substances with a court appearance on October 1. - ➤ Lori Beach-Grass, who retired from teaching due to multiple sclerosis, started the spoken word club LIT UP at Rockford’s West Middle School before the group moved meetups to Auburn High School. The club recorded poems live at the WNIJ studio as Beach-Grass shared her poem 'Participation Points' to encourage active participation in shaping local futures — a theme that unites the community. - ➤ Rockford seniors at the Luther Center met with U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen and Councilmember Tamir Bell to warn that cuts to Social Security and SSI benefits could force them into hardship—claims from those relying on these funds for survival. Rep.
