  • Applefest returns at Valley Orchard in Cherry Valley to celebrate the harvest season; it runs from August 30—September 1 at 811 E. State Street and offers U-Pick apples, flower picking, wagon rides, food trucks, and a gift shop. Live music is scheduled on August 30 from 11 a.m.—3 p.m. and today from noon—2 p.m.  WIFR
  • Last Saturday, a canceled Rockford Jams event brought many locals to Sinnissippi Park when rescheduled summer acts performed in place of shows that normally ended in July. The Rockford Park District Board said they added the Ozzy Osbourne Band to the lineup—bringing extra excitement for local fans.  WIFR

CRIME NEWS

  • On August 28, Winnebago County Deputies pulled over a gray Audi missing a rear license plate on South Independence Avenue and Naquion Spivey, 21, fled before a police K9 tracked a handgun on the ground and caught him in an open garage on Montague Street—he now faces charges for unlawful cannabis possession, aggravated unlawful possession of a loaded firearm, and resisting an officer.  WTVO
  • A 32-year-old named Jacquavia Thompson was arrested on August 20 by the Rockford Police Narcotics Unit after a search warrant on the 2300 block of Huffman Boulevard uncovered over three grams of cocaine, more than 15 grams of heroin, and a handgun—she faces charges for possession with intent to deliver and was later released by the court.  WIFR

  • Womanspace marks its 50th anniversary with a free retrospective art exhibit—displaying work by founders Dorothy Bock and Elaine Hirschenberger—that runs from August 29-October 12 at the Loretta and William Reif Gallery and will feature in Rockford’s Fall ArtScene.  WIFR

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Ernie’s Midtown Pub hosted a magical themed brunch event on August 30th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1025 5th Avenue in Rockford—attendees dressed in Potter-inspired costumes to win prizes while enjoying themed cocktails, a chorizo breakfast bowl, a full menu, and a happy hour from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  WIFR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rockford Park District opened the Clarence Hicks Memorial Sports Complex Saturday to give local athletes a new facility with an eight lane track, a pro turf field, bleacher seating for over 1,000 fans, LED field lights and other features. The $7.5 million project came after community feedback and includes a press box and a 64 stall parking lot with solar lights — a major boost for youth sports in Rockford.  WIFR
